If You Don't Have an Aunt

If You Don't Have an Aunt

Sergey Nikitin

About Sergey Nikitin

Sergey Nikitin is one of the most beloved figures of the Russian bard tradition — a singer-songwriter, composer, and guitarist whose work has shaped generations of listeners. Trained as a physicist and holding a Candidate of Sciences degree in physics and mathematics, Nikitin pursued music alongside an academic career, beginning in his student years by setting the poems of renowned Russian poets to music.

For most of his artistic life, Sergey performed in a celebrated creative and family duo with his wife, Tatyana Nikitina. Together, they became known for their thoughtful interpretations of poetry, sophisticated ensemble arrangements, and distinctive sound, shaped in part by Sergey’s masterful playing on the seven-string Russian guitar, tuned in the traditional “Gypsy minor” style.

Over the decades, the Nikitins' creative partnership earned enduring admiration from audiences and helped introduce countless listeners to some of the finest works of Russian poetry. Sergey Nikitin’s music has also reached millions through film: he composed songs for numerous popular movies. Sergey Nikitin has become not only a distinguished composer and performer, but also one of the foremost ambassadors of Russian poetic song.

About This Song

In this wry and seemingly lighthearted song from the lyrical comedy The Irony of Fate, everyday “non-possessions” are spun into a chain of ironic comforts: no house to fear fires, no friend to fight with, no aunt to lose. Yet behind the playful reasoning lies a quiet philosophical twist, as “to have or not to have” echoes Shakespeare’s “to be or not to be,” turning a joke about absence into a reflection on what it means for anything in life to truly matter.

In the film, the song is performed by the main character, Zhenya Lukashin, played by actor Andrey Myagkov. However, the singing voice is that of the renowned bard and composer Sergey Nikitin, who also contributed music to the film.

If you have no house,
It has nothing to fear from fires,
And your wife won’t leave for another man
If you have, if you have,
If you have no wife,
No wife.

If you don’t have a dog,
A neighbor won’t poison it,
And you won’t have a fight with a friend
If you have, if you have
If you have no friend.
No friend.

The orchestra roars with basses,
The trumpeter blasts the brass.
Think for yourself, decide for yourself
To have or not to have.

If you don’t have an aunt,
You won’t have to lose her,
And if you are not living,
You won’t, you won’t,
You won’t die,
Won't die.

The orchestra roars with basses,
The trumpeter blasts the brass.
Think for yourself, decide for yourself
To have or not to have.
To have or not to have.
