Оди́н кора́бль обошёл вокру́г све́та и возвраща́лся домо́й. A ship had sailed around the world and was returning home. Была́ ти́хая пого́да, The weather was calm (= "there was calm weather").весь наро́д был на па́лубе. /and/ everyone (= “all the people”) was on deckПосреди́ наро́да верте́лась бо́льшая обезья́на и забавля́ла всех. In the middle of the crowd (народ - people), a large monkey was spinning around and amusing everyone. Обезья́на э́та ко́рчилась, пры́гала, де́лала смешны́е ро́жи, передра́знивала люде́й, The monkey grimaced, jumped around, pulled funny faces, and mimicked the people и ви́дно бы́ло — она́ зна́ла, что е́ю забавля́ются, and it was clear it knew /that/ people were entertained by itи оттого́ ещё бо́льше расходи́лась. and that only made it grow even more lively.

Она́ подпры́гнула к 12-ле́тнему ма́льчику, It sprang towards a twelve-year-old boyсы́ну капита́на корабля́, the captain’s sonсорвала́ с его́ головы́ шля́пу, snatched the hat off his headнаде́ла и жи́во взобрала́сь на ма́чту. put it on /itself/, and quickly climbed up the mast Все засмея́лись, а ма́льчик оста́лся без шля́пы Everyone burst out laughing, while the boy was left without his hat и сам не знал, смея́ться ли ему́, и́ли пла́кать and didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry.

Матро́сы гро́мче ста́ли смея́ться, The sailors began to laugh /even/louderа ма́льчик покрасне́л, ски́нул ку́ртку and the boy turned red, threw off his jacketи бро́сился за обезья́ной на ма́чту. and rushed after the monkey up the mastВ одну́ мину́ту он взобра́лся по верёвке на пе́рвую перекла́дину; In a moment he climbed the rope to the first crossbeamно обезья́на ещё ловче́е и быстре́е его́, but the monkey, even more agile and quicker than he wasв ту са́мую мину́ту, как он ду́мал схвати́ть шля́пу, At the very instant when he thought he would grab the hatвзобрала́сь ещё вы́ше. climbed even higher

— Так не уйдёшь же ты от меня́! You won’t get away from me!— закрича́л ма́льчик и поле́з вы́ше. the boy shouted and climbed higher

Обезья́на опя́ть подмани́ла его́, The monkey again lured him on поле́зла ещё вы́ше, climbed even higherно ма́льчика уже́ разобра́л задо́р, but by then the boy had become carried away (задор - playful challenge)и он не отстава́л. and he did not fall behindТак обезья́на и ма́льчик в одну́ мину́ту добра́лись до самого́ ве́рха.So the monkey and the boy, in a single minute, reached the very top.

He was carrying a rifle to shoot seagulls. Он увида́л сы́на на ма́чте, He saw his son on the mastи то́тчас же прице́лился в сы́на и закрича́л: and at once aimed at his son and shouted

- В воду! прыгай сейчас в воду! Into the water! Jump into the water at once! Застрелю! I’ll shoot you!

Ма́льчик шата́лся, но не понима́л. The boy was swaying but did not understand.«Пры́гай и́ли застрелю́!.. Раз, два…» Jump, or I’ll shoot!... One, two…и как то́лько оте́ц кри́кнул: «три» and as soon as the father shouted “three”— ма́льчик размахну́лся голово́й вниз и пры́гнул. the boy swung himself headfirst and jumped (вниз - down)

То́чно пу́шечное ядро́, Like a cannonball шлёпнуло те́ло ма́льчика в мо́ре, the boy’s body splashed into the sea и не успе́ли во́лны закры́ть его́, and before the waves had even closed over him (успеть - to be in time) как уже́ 20 молодцо́в матро́сов спры́гнули с корабля́ в мо́ре. twenty strong sailors had already jumped from the ship into the waterСеку́нд че́рез 40 — вы́нырнуло те́ло ма́льчика. About forty seconds later, the boy’s body came up to the surface.

Его́ схвати́ли и вы́тащили на кора́бль. They grabbed him and pulled him onto the ship. Че́рез не́сколько мину́т у него́ и́зо рта и из но́са полила́сь вода́, A few minutes later, water poured out of his mouth and noseи он стал дыша́ть. and he began to breathe

Когда́ капита́н увида́л э́то, When the captain saw this он вдруг закрича́л, he suddenly cried outкак бу́дто его́ что́-то души́ло, as if something were choking himи убежа́л к себе́ в каю́ту, and ran to his cabin чтоб никто́ не вида́л, как он пла́чет. so that no one would see him crying
