The lyrics of the song were written by the well-known Russian poet Alexander Kushner, and the music was composed by Grigory Gladkov, who also performs it in the film.

The animation itself began almost by chance. While in Koktebel, the young animation directors Alexander Tatarsky and Igor Kovalyov heard Gladkov singing the song with a guitar and were immediately taken with it. At the time they had just founded a small animation studio in Kyiv, working with an improvised animation stand built from an X-ray machine mounted on a bed. The idea soon arose to turn the song into a short animated film — the beginning of a creative collaboration.

The song was recorded in a communal apartment in Leningrad. Gladkov accompanied himself on a twelve-string guitar and invited a flutist and a cellist, forming a small, informal ensemble.

About This Song

This popular animated film from the 1980s introduces three genres of painting – still life, landscape, and portrait. Its playful song is based on a lighthearted poem for children by Alexander Kushner, a poet well known in Russian literature.

Most of the pictures in the film were created by the children’s animation studio in Kyiv, though viewers will also spot two famous masterpieces: Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Girl with Peaches by the Russian painter Valentin Serov.

If you see in a picture a river is painted,
Or a fir-tree and white frost, or a garden and clouds
Or a snowy plane, or a field and a hut
No doubt the picture is called a landscape.

If you see in a picture a cup of coffee on a table,
Or some juice in a big flagon, or a rose in a cut glass,
Or a bronze vase, or some pears or a cake,
Or all the objects at once- you should know it's a still- life.

If you see that from a picture
Someone is looking at us

Either a prince in an ancient cloak,
Or a steeplejack wearing a robe
A pilot or a ballet dancer, or your neighbor Kolka
No doubt the painting is called... A cupboard!
Not a cupboard, but a portrait!
